1. Puppies aren’t for everyone
Yes they’re cute and adorable. But they’re also a lot of work. Consider all the time and energy that goes into house training and behavior training; not to mention the cost of vaccines and getting them fixed. If you’re schedule doesn’t allow for the time dedication that a puppy requires, older dogs are a great. They already understand at least the basic commands and they just want a companion – just like you!
2. Older Dogs Aren’t Trouble
Contrary to popular belief, many older dogs aren’t in shelters because they misbehaved. Shelters aren’t doggy jail. Many of these pets came from loving families that had to give them up for a ton of other reasons. Maybe their owner got sick and couldn’t take care of them anymore. Perhaps the family had to move and couldn’t afford to bring Fito along. Whatever the reasons, your local shelter can direct you to a senior dog that will fit your lifestyle.
3. What you see is what you get
You’ll know exactly how big the pup will get, cause he won’t get any bigger! No guessing game or surprises in a year or two which will make budgeting the bags of dog food that much easier.
4. They aren’t as hyper
One of the best things about a puppy is their energy. One of the worst things about a puppy is the energy never ends. Older dogs have moved out of the never-ending-puppy-o-matic stages and are way more chill. They’ll easily mix into your vibe when you come home from work and just want to relax or go for an easy stroll.
5. Be someone’s hero
Shelters often get overcrowded and the unfortunate truth is that older dogs are usually the first to get euthanized. Save a life and adopt a senior dog.
